Feature of the Week: Grown Woman’s Club

1) Who are you?

Grown Woman’s Club is a non-profit start-up organization. We are an organization dedicated to re-branding sisterhood and empowering women to be better women to themselves, and to other women in their community. We are working to change how women view & treat one another; starting with how they view and treat themselves.

2) What is your blog, program, agency, organization about? When did it start?

Grown Woman’s Club also known as GWC started as an idea back in 2016. Our founder Briana Unique D. was on Facebook one evening and witnessed a common theme amongst the statuses being posted by some of her female friends. There were about 8+ back to back statuses of women coming down on other women, and she immediately felt that there needed to be a huge change in the community. Not long after, GWC’s President Briana and Vice President Nellie banded together to form what is officially known as Grown Woman’s Club today!

We officially launched in January of 2019, and have been hosting monthly meetings and events! We’ve created a judge free space, dedicated to bringing women together to engage in discussions, activities, and workshops that help us as women identify the social issues amongst each other and learn different ways to contribute to changing it for the better! We get real, raw, and sometimes emotional allowing for women with all backgrounds and stories to have a voice and feel welcomed and loved. We provide life coaching, and fun nights all while networking and building meaningful relationships with one another. We’re the sisterhood everyone is invited to be a part of!

3)  What is your mission? Why do you feel strongly about this particular area of interest?

Our mission is to provide women with resources that help encourage positive relationships throughout their community. We are re-branding sisterhood by changing the social interactions between women for the better, and empowering women to be their absolute best-selves!

Our mission is important to us because we realize just how important and necessary it is for women to have other women in their lives. We need each other! It’s really as simple as that. Yet when we surveyed some women within the community, almost everyone agreed that befriending other women is difficult due to judgement, negative assumptions, betrayal, etc. There are a lot of amazing groups out there focused on empowering women and standing together. Many even talk about how we shouldn't compare ourselves. And we love and respect every single one of these groups. However; we realized what was missing was the conversation of how. How do we get women to stop seeing each other in a negative light, or to stop competing with one another after we’ve been doing it since forever? That’s why our mission is so important! We don’t just want to empower, we want to re-brand sisterhood so that it isn’t just about banding together with women you have common interests with, or that walk within your circle. We want to teach women to love themselves so deeply, that they’ll be able to view and accept every woman as a sister.

4) If someone asked for your feedback on how to live their best life? What would your response be in one sentence?

The greatest advice on how to live your best life that we could give anyone would be, to "Learn to be truly happy with who you are and own it, because being you is the power nobody else will or can ever have!"
