Devotionals: Be Still and Know That He is God

Exodus 14: 13-14
13 Moses answered the people, “ Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the deliverance the Lord will bring you today. The Egyptians you see today you will never see again. 14 The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.

I am someone who goes, goes, goes; I don’t like being still. Whether I am alone or with friends, I have to go outdoors and do something at least every other day. It refreshes me. Whether I take a walk to the park, visit a museum, go someplace for coffee, take a ride on the train; I just go. I can’t sit inside for too long or I start to feel imprisoned. This was my state of mind before my accident. Before the doctor said I needed to take  two weeks to a month off, before I went back to work and continued my usual routine.
Though I am someone who goes, goes, goes; until my accident, I never really understood the importance of being still. I was always running, running, running. I felt life was too short to slow down. But even God had to rest. The Bible tells us in Genesis chapter 2 , after six days of creating and forming the Heavens and Earth, God rested. He rested on the 7th day. If God needs rest, how much more does this tell us that we need to?
We are God’s people, his creation. Just as we go in life, there are also times we need to take a halt. During my time of recovery, I have learned that being still is a necessity. How can we spend time for self, learn new things, have time to think, allow time for God to lead us, if we are busy moving, moving, moving? In a time where  things are happening so rapidly, hurricanes, disasters, wars, violence, famine; there is only so much we can do. God is our savior, our deliverer, our healer, our protector and so much more.  He will never leave us or forsake us.
In the book of Exodus, while Moses was leading the Israelite slaves out of Egypt, Pharaoh and his people still wanted to reign over the Israelites and keep them in bondage. After all the plagues, God’s warning, and discipline; the Egyptians still kept on with their evil plots and schemes.  When the Israelites were just on their way to freedom, Pharaoh and his men came again. God spoke through Moses “Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the deliverance the Lord will bring you today. The Egyptians you see today you will never see again. 14 The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.”
Being still is hard, and it is natural to react instantly or try to come up with a solution to our everyday problems, but some problems are just out of our hands. I believe, if we wait on God, trust in him, and pray earnestly; we will get to see, hear and feel his presence among us. Isaiah 41:10 says “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God.  I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”
Be Encouraged,
Noelani
