Devotionals: The Best Gift of Them All

Luke 2: 13-14
13 Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying,14 “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.”

Christmas is coming around, and in the midst of all of the shopping and holiday cheer, it can be easy to forget what the celebration is all about. As the holiday nears, we scramble around trying to get last minute gifts, get frustrated if we don’t have the funds to get the particular gift someone wanted, and the time that is supposed to be spent on creating joy and happiness, is replaced by greed and sadness. This is why it is so important to focus on what the actual meaning of Christmas is really about. Let me tell you a story.

In Luke 2:1-20, the bible tells us about the beautiful story of the Birth of Jesus, and how his birth was a gift to all. One night, some shepherd’s that lived within the same town baby Jesus was kept, were tending their flocks when an angel came to visit them. The angel told them that a Savior had been born, and that he was lying in a manger wrapped in cloths not too far away from them. Soon after, a cloud of heavenly host appeared to the shepherds and they began praising God. The praises of the heavenly host uttered ““Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.” When the heavenly host left, the shepherds hurried off to go see the baby. The baby’s name was Jesus. The shepherds were so happy that they could not contain themselves. They quickly spread the news concerning what the angel had told them about the child.

Something to think about: Why did the heavenly host begin praising God, after the message from the angel was delivered to the shepherds? They began praising because they knew that the announcement regarding the child’s birth, was the first announcement told to the people ever. The angels had been waiting on the birth of Jesus for many years, as they had no idea when he would come. They knew the child would be a light to many, and knew he would touch the lives of people all over the world. They also knew that Jesus would be the Savior, and the intercessor/ middleman between man and God. How great of a story is this? God gave us his son to save us from sin, to save us from the corruption of this world. To give us another chance at life. God loves us so much, that he sacrificed his only begotten son for the savings of our lives. This ought to be the best gift in the World. The Gift of Life.

Be Encouraged and Happy Holidays,
